GOD BLESS AMERICA
GETTYSBURG ADDRESS
Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this
continent a new Nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the
proposition that all men are created equal. Now, we are engaged in a
great Civil War, testing whether that Nation, or any nation so
conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great
battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that
field as a final resting-place for those who gave their lives that
that Nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we
should do this.
But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we
cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who
struggled here, have consecrated it far above our power to add or
detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say
here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the
living, rather to be dedicated to the great task remaining before us;
that from these honored dead, we take increased devotion to that cause
for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that this
Nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that
government of the People by the People and for the People shall not
perish from the earth. Abraham Lincoln
I Took My Guitar To The
Supper Table
I got so excited writing the songs in this
album that youd think I just started out in the music business. Its something
I always wanted to do, write an album of all my own songs and for some reason, I just
never got around to it. One reason, I suppose, is that I have so many friends that are
good song writers and their songs just kept on coming along.
But it seemed like in the last year or two, these songs started
bubbling out of me more than ever and I started putting down everything that came out. I
sang them for my family and my friends and all they had to do was say dad they liked one
and Id go write another one. Iver been doing things I did twenty years ago,
jumping up in the middle of the night, grabbing a piece of paper in the dark, writing down
a line or two so I wont forget it tomorrow, and I found myself actually finishing
all the songs for the first time and Id grab every passing thought, every catchy
phrase and put it down. And there where times I even took my guitar to the super table. I
was working so hard on a song, I didnt want to give it up for a few minutes. So
while I ate with my family, I worked on the song at the same time and they cut my song to
pieces. I have and understanding with my wife and girls. They shoot straight with me on
what they like and what they dont like concerning my song.
Some of them came easy, with in a matter of minutes or an hour at
the most. But on some of them I wrung my mind, I bit the pen and walked the floor and the
songs didnt want to come. But they finally did, they all came together. So I guess
youd say they are some of my most profound, passing thoughts.
There was one of them, "Ragged Old Flag" that I
didnt even have any control over. It came out faster than I could write it down.
Youve heard of people who write song in ten minutes. "ragged Old Flag" was
one of those songs. Then I recorded it at a Columbia luncheon at the House Of Cash and the
applause is from the Columbia recording people who where in convention there. Chuck
Cochran arranged the most unusual orchestration ( and Earl Srcuggs played the banjo ).
On the other eleven songs we went into the studio with
the Tennessee Three, Carl Perkins, Larry McCoy, Ray Edenton, and I talked the Oak Ridge
Boys into coming and singing on a couple of them. No wild, weird sounds, no extra icing. I
recorded them the way I felt them.
And I sang them for you, making believe
they you were one of those that were sitting down to dinner with me when I took my guitar
to the supper table, Johnny
Cash
