The Christmas spirit offers singer-songwriter-composer Johnny Cash in a special kind of holiday album. Of course, Johnny has included traditional carols that sing of the season of season’s wonder, awe and promise of hope. But most of the songs in the collection are by Johnny himself and are concerned with giving in the worshipful spirit that the Wise Men and shepherds felt long ago when they offered gifts to a being they somehow knew was greater then themselves. Christmas As I Knew It tells us how as a youngster Johnny and his family celebrate their holiday in Dyess, Arkansas, by a simple but sincere act of good will toward across-the-road neighbors. The Cash family, although disappointed by their failing cotton crop, felt blessed that they had one another, good, heath and had enough to share with others less fortunate then they.

The Little Drummer Boy and such Johnny Cash originals as Ringing The Bells For Jim, We Are The Shepherds and Kept The Sheep, all captured the spirit of giving, whether it be the drummer boy’s humble offering to the Child, the shepherds gift of a candle to the light his stable, or Gods gift of protection to the shepherds abandoned flocks. Johnny concludes his album with a musical setting of Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem, Ballad Of The Harp Weaver

Johnny Cash’s 1980 Classic Christmas CD is the most recent and the most conventional, of his three Christmas albums. On previous Christmas efforts, Cash mixed original compositions with classic carols, and the songs were arranged in the spare, folky style that has become Cash’s trademark sound. Classic Christmas , however, includes only popular carols ( among them "Joy To The World," "O little Town Of Bethlehem" and "Hark The Herald Angels Sing" ) performed to the accompaniment of a full lavishly arranged orchestra. Cash is best on the two recitations that close the album, particularly on the closer " The Christmas Guest" a Grandpa Jones composition that tells the parable of an old man unaware that he has been visited three times by the lord on Christmas day. This is truly one of his best Christmas CD’s

During the thirty-plus years that Johnny Cash recorded for Columbia he released three Christmas albums. A note from Cash on the back cover of PERSONAL CHRISTMAS COLLECTION explains that this album represents the artist's twelve favorite selections from those records. 1963's THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT and the 1980 release CLASSIC CHRISTMAS are represented with five tracks each; the 1972 album CHRISTMAS-THE JOHNNY CASH FAMILY contributed only two tracks to this collection.

Each set of songs accurately reflects the era in which it was recorded. The 1960s selections are spare, classic Cash. Included among them are two moving originals, "The Christmas Spirit," in which Cash chronicles his encounters with Christmas cheer as he tours the world, and "Christmas As I Knew It," a recounting of Christmases during Cash's impoverished youth in rural Arkansas. The selections from 1972 are cheery and informal, capturing the spirit of the "outlaw" movement with which Cash was loosely associated. The final cuts are heavily orchestrated, sounding very much as if they were produced for a holiday television special.
