The release of
“Elite Hotel” Singer /songwriter, Emmylou
Harris established herself as an original and accessible
country/rock artist, drawing on influences ranging from Lennon McCarty to
Hank Williams. Born in Birmingham, Alabama and raised in a Virginia suburb
of Washington, D.C. Emmylou preformed as a folk singer during her college
years, subsequently becoming part of the thriving Greenwich Village music
scene in the late 60’s. In 1970, she recorded her album, Gliding Bird on
the small Jubilee label.

While playing the Cellar
Door Club in Washington D.C. she met Gram Parsons, founding member of the
pioneering country/rock band, the Flying Burrito Brothers. Harris began a
creative partnership with Parsons, recording and touring with him, until
his sudden death in 1973 ( she would later write a song about Parsons,
“Boulder To Barrington” which was recorded by Dolly Parton ) Returning
to Washington, she formed a backing group, Angel Band, and in 1975
released her Reprise records debut. Pieces Of The Sky. The LP featuring
former Elvis Presley sideman Ron Tutt, James Burton and Glen D. Hardin
immediately established her as an import new arrival on both the pop and
contemporary country scene.
Pieces
Of The Sky was followed in December of 1975 by Elite Hotel. Produced by
Brian ahem, whom she would later marry, the album features a diverse range
of material including the Hank Williams classic “Jambalaya” and
Lennon/McCartney’s “Here, there And everywhere,” Other standard cuts
include Burrito Brothers Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman’s “Sin City”
and “Wheels and the Emmylou Harris/Rodney Crowell collaboration, “
Amarillo” Elite Hotel spawned two No. 1 country hits with Buck Owens
“Together Again” and an updating of the Don Gibson/Pasty Cline
perennial “Sweet Dream” The LP also introduced Emmylou’s premier
backing group, the Hat Band, featuring guitarist James Burton, keyboard
Glen D. Hardin, guitarist / Crowell and others.
